Hosts Luxembourg vie for a medal at women’s SCD Finals
2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Small Countries Division

Luxembourg, June 20, 2017. This coming weekend Luxembourg will be hosting the final stage of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Women’s European Championship – Small Countries Division (SCD). The home favourites, aka the ‘Red Lion Ladies’, will be fighting for a medal and are motivated to build on their success from the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) in San Marino where they won bronze only a few weeks ago.

It is not going to be an easy mission to accomplish since Luxembourg will play Cyprus, the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Scotland – teams all performing at the same level, so the experts predict that anyone can beat anyone. Luxembourg are hoping to take another medal, but they do not disclose their dreams too openly. “If you look at the results of the matches we recently played in San Marino, anything is possible,” said Luxembourg head coach Detlev Schönberg.

The roster of Team Luxembourg has undergone some changes for the SCD Finals with Lara Ernster coming back to the team and replacing Carla Mulli, who is not eligible to compete in this tournament since she holds German citizenship. Ernster is supposed to bring more consistency to the team – and the setter will change as well, with Julie Teso stepping in for Michèle Breuer, who is busy with her academic commitments.

Team Luxembourg are ready to fight for the medals to finish what has been a long and busy indoor season. They count on the support of the home fans, even more since entrance to the matches at the iconic d’Coque is free.

“We take a lot of confidence from the performance we showed in San Marino where we saw that the team can play with much confidence,” says Technical Director Burkhard Disch. “The special regulations about foreign players apply to us as much as to any other team, so compared to the GSSE all teams have to deal with that. With the help of the fans and of the Luxembourg Volleyball family, the Red Lion Ladies should be able to take another medal.”
