C.S.M. BUCURESTI dethrone BURSA BBSK to write history for Romania
2016 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Women

Bucharest, Romania, March 13, 2016. On Sunday C.S.M. BUCURESTI claimed a historic qualification for the final stage of the 2016 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women following their compelling 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-14, 25-14) over 2015 gold medallists BURSA BBSK of Turkey to delight 1,000 fans in attendance. As a result, C.S.M. BUCURESTI can boast the honour of being the first ever Romanian women’s team to contest a final of the European Cups where later this month they will be playing yet another Turkish team, TRABZON Idman Ocagi.

C.S.M. BUCURESTI had laid the foundations of their historic achievement last Wednesday when they had cruised to a rather surprising 3-1 victory in Turkey but the Romanian ‘Tigresses’ knew their opponents would try to come back in order to remain in contention for back-to-back titles in the competition. BURSA BBSK came out with all guns blazing and edged ahead at 13-9 as they put a lot of pressure on the Romanian receivers. However, C.S.M. BUCURESTI responded by scoring eight consecutive points with Jasna Majstorovic standing behind the service line to contribute to a 17-13 Romanian lead later in the set. The hosts did not look back anymore and secured the opening set by 25-22 also by virtue of 10 points scored by their opposite Roxana Bacsis.

BURSA BBSK caught a solid start also in the second set to claim an early three-point lead at the first technical time-out (8-5). However, after the actions resumed, the match turned into a pretty one-sided affair with C.S.M. BUCURESTI scoring time and again to delight their fans and cruise to a dominant 25-14 set win.

At this stage, the Romanian ‘Tigresses’ had already secured their qualification for the finals but performed well also in the third set, which they again won by 25-14, with the audience almost standing on their feet. Roxana Bacsis finished the match with an amazing tally of 26 points.

The Serbian-born coach of BURSA BBSK Dragan Nesic commented: “Our team did not perform at all in this match but I cannot deny that C.S.M. BUCURESTI, on the other hand, played a great game. I want to congratulate their players and wish them the best of luck for the finals.”

Home mentor Francois Salvagni commented: “I felt a lot of pressure in the early stages of the match where Jelena Nikolic played just superbly for BURSA BBSK. However, we got back on track with a series of serves by Jasna Majstorovic. We have a team that one day may be able to beat any opponent. Everything went just fine, Giulia Pincerato and Jole Ruzzini had their best game of the season, Bacsis played like she was from another planet; our middle blockers Georgiana Fales and Laura Pihlajamäki dominated at the net and the outside spikers Majstorovic and Mariya Karakasheva did extremely well too,” concluded the Italian coach of C.S.M. BUCURESTI.
