SCHWERINER SC want to erase memories from 2015 Challenge Cup semis in clash with Galatasaray ISTANBUL
2016 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women

Schwerin, Germany, March 7, 2016. Making the semis of the 2016 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women is one of the most impressive results ever achieved by SCHWERINER SC but the Germans are still longing for more. On Tuesday night they will be hosting Turkey’s Galatasaray ISTANBUL in the first round of the semis and SCHWERINER SC are hoping to use the home advantage to get the right edge for the away match that is due to follow later this week in Istanbul.

“We didn’t expect to make it that far in the CEV Volleyball Cup but now that we are here we want to do our best to reach the finals,” said Chairman Michael Evers at a press conference he attended last week. The track of the two teams in this year’s CEV Volleyball Cup is similar: both teams lost at the tie-break their away match in the Round of 32 but after that they sailed through the 8th finals, quarter-finals and the Challenge Round.

“Galatasaray ISTANBUL is one of the top teams in Europe and we know that the upcoming match will be tougher than the games we contested in the previous rounds but if we continue playing like we did in the last matches [SCHWERINER SC just secured second place in the German championship and as a result they are in a good position for the start of the Playoffs] we do have a chance,” says head coach Felix Koslowski.

Denise Hanke is looking forward to the upcoming matches especially because “of the atmosphere. I am sure that our arena will be packed with fans and European Cup matches in Turkey attract many fans too,” acknowledges the setter who spent one season in Turkey playing for Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL two years ago.

One year ago SCHWERINER SC played the semi-final of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup against BURSA BBSK from Turkey and had to admit defeat at the golden set in front of a raucous Turkish crowd. That is something that no one wants to happen again in Schwerin, the city known for being one of Germany’s Volleyball ‘Meccas’.
