4,000 kids from Kashubia attend last act of Polish national league in Sopot

Sopot, Poland, May 1, 2016. A mind-boggling number of 8,558 fans gathered on the stands of Ergo Arena for the third and eventual final match of the championship series between PGE Atom Trefl SOPOT and Chemik POLICE in the Polish women’s national league. Among so many die-hard Volleyball fans, there were also 4,002 kids from the Kashubia region, all enthusiastically rooting for the home team of SOPOT as the Atomic Girls were fighting for their country’s most coveted Volleyball crown. These numbers account for the largest kids’ participation ever registered at a sports event organised in the Pomerania Region.

“Active Kashubia. Landscape. People. Happenings” – a special art contest addressed to the kids from the Kashubia region was the very first project that the Trefl Pomerania Association set up together with Commonality of Kashubia-Pomerania. The goal was to extend the kids’ knowledge about their – so called – little homeland through exercising and developing their art skills.
The interest in this project turned out to be just enormous. Exactly 208 schools, where kids are able to learn the Kashubian language, took part in the contest producing as many as 639 artworks. The winners were awarded during the final game played by PGE Atom Trefl at Ergo Arena in front of their colleagues from other boroughs of the Kashubian region. What’s more, people could see the final exhibition of the kids’ artworks being displayed right next to the playing area.
“I am very happy and proud, that so many kids from Kashubia were our guests during the game that was held on Thursday night at Ergo Arena. They delivered an unbelievable show from the stands, helping our players do their best. Despite the final score, which was a little bit disappointing for us, thanks to them this match turned into something truly amazing. I hope that they will come back and visit us again with their classes or just with their parents. I hope that this experience will encourage the young generation to be more eager to enjoy the physical education classes at their schools or just to spend more time with their friends away from their computers and digital devices. Of course I also hope they were all mesmerised by Volleyball,” said PGE Atom Trefl club’s president, Mr Marek Wierzbicki.
The special visit of so many kids during the most important game of the season was a joyful experience for sure, but also kind of a marvellous occasion to engage young people with the sport and make them understand what Volleyball is all about.
“Indeed, the sports hall was incredibly alive for the last home match of our Atomic Girls! The youngsters’ enthusiasm was simply incredible. They came to Ergo Arena with some black-and-yellow flags, which are the traditional colours of their home region and made this game so special, doing a great job for their beloved Kashubia. The view of so many busses coming to the hall and the large number of kids amazed each of us. This means that our mission was crowned with success, so we have started thinking about the next projects and contests,” said the member of Trefl Pomerania Association, Mr Janusz Benesz.
