VakifBank set sights on fifth Final Four appearance in six years
2016 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women

Istanbul, Turkey, March 8, 2016. After a dominant win against arch-rivals Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL in the second leg of the Playoffs 12, VakifBank ISTANBUL will be hosting Swiss champions Volero ZÜRICH this coming Thursday for the last round of Europe’s elite competition prior to the Final Four. These teams crossed their ways already in the pool stage of the 2013 edition and back then VakifBank claimed two wins against their star-studded rival from Switzerland’s largest city.

VakifBank ISTANBUL are by far the most successful team in the last five editions of the CEV Volleyball Champions League, having made the podium four times and topped it in 2011 and 2013. Last year they had to be content with the bronze medal and in 2014 they lost the final match to Russia’s Dinamo KAZAN. The Turkish ‘Dragons’ are determined to make it through to the final stages once more. They have swept eight consecutive matches this year in the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League whereas Volero had to admit their first defeat in the opening leg of their Playoffs 12 double header with Azerbaijan’s Lokomotiv BAKU before they came back strong to secure their progression to the Playoffs 6.

VaifBank coach Giovanni Guidetti said: “Volero ZÜRICH have a really great team, they are very tall and experienced. They have lost only one game since the beginning of the season. We know it will not be easy and we are working very hard for this match. As always our self-confidence is high and I believe we will have an advantage at the end of the first leg.”

VakifBank star setter Naz Aydemir Akyol: “There is no need to say how important this match is going to be. To play the first game at our home will be an advantage only as long as we win. For two weeks our focus will entirely be on this round and we will give our best to reach the Final Four again. I hope we can extend our winning streak in front of our supporters.”

Middle blocker Kübra Akman concluded: “We will play another tough round after our matches with Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL. We want to survive this challenge and get a ticket to Montichiari where the Final Four will be contested. We are very excited and can’t wait to begin this battle.”
