Games of the Small States of Europe officially opened in Reykjavik
2015 Games of the Small States of Europe
Reykjavik, Iceland, June 2, 2015. The Opening Ceremony of the 2015 Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) took place in Laugardalshöll on Monday evening. Since the weather in Iceland is unpredictable, it was decided to hold the ceremony indoors. In June 1997, i.e. the last edition of the GSSE that was hosted by Iceland, the Opening Ceremony was held in Laugardalsvöllur Stadium, and then it was snowing. Anything can happen when it comes to the always special Icelandic summer weather.
The presenter of the Opening Ceremony was Þóra Arnórsdóttir. The singer Páll Óskar made sure that the audience had good fun in the opening act, which was inspired by Icelandic nature. With Páll Óskar on the stage were numerous dancers who participated in an entertaining and beautiful piece. Among the guests were the leaders of the countries involved in the Games.
The participants all walked on the stage with their flag-bearer before they turned to their seats. Lárus Blöndal, President of the Icelandic Olympic Committee, and Marc Theisen, representative of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), addressed the athletes and the audience.
The Volleyball competition is set to start on Tuesday with two matches on schedule for the women’s tournament: San Marino open the programme playing Montenegro before the home heroines of Iceland take on Liechtenstein.
The Beach Volleyball competition will also get underway on Tuesday at the venue set up right next to the Laugardalslaug Aquatic Centre with three matches per gender on schedule.
