Turkey claim first ticket to European League finals after second easy win over Israel
2015 CEV Volleyball European League - Women
Izmir, Turkey, September 6, 2015. On Sunday Turkey women’s national team secured their qualification to the final stage of the 2015 CEV Volleyball European League after recording their second consecutive straight-set semi-final win over Israel (25-10, 25-21, 25-19). Turkey had already downed Israel last Thursday in Ra’anana and need ‘only’ two sets to move on to the next and last act of the competition where they will be trying to retain the crown they won last year when they beat Germany in the finals. Their next opponent will be Greece or Hungary, with the first leg of the finals scheduled for Thursday, September 10, and the return following then on Sunday, September 13.
The match was marked by the low rate of efficiency that both teams registered in attack and defence. However, Turkey made the difference with their outstanding blocking and things became even easier for the hosts as Israel gave away as many as 25 points on their own errors.
Home mentor Ismail Yengil said: “Even though we did not play very well, we managed to win. We have another two days to prepare for the finals. We first wait to know the name of our opponent and after that we will start preparing for the final series.”
“We did not play well but nevertheless we were able to win this game,” commented home star Meryem Boz, top scorer for Turkey with 12 points. “Thanks to the crowd that came out to support us! Tomorrow we will already start our preparations for the finals.”
“Our performance was bad, especially in attack and service reception,” commented Israel’s coach Arie Selinger. “We did a little better in the second set but Turkey’s team is in general performing at a higher level than we do.”
