Greece rely on home fans to make first step towards European League finals
2015 CEV Volleyball European League - Women
Megalopolis, Greece, September 2, 2015. After the League Round of the 2015 CEV Volleyball European League - Women came to an end this past weekend, the countdown started in Megalopolis where on Thursday Greece will face Hungary’s national team for the first of the two semi-final matches (the second one will then follow on Sunday, September 9, in Szombathely).
The local heroines will be vying for their first ever European League Final and they have already played two matches in Megalopolis (for the fourth leg of the preliminary round against Georgia and they won both of them by 3-0) hoping that they will extend their winning streak.
“I think we are ready for this challenge. We have already played against Hungary before but for sure semi-finals are something different. There is much more pressure but on the other hand both teams have some experienced players. In general I’m expecting a tough match but I hope that with the help of our fans, because I’m sure that we will play before a sell-out crowd, we will manage to make the first step towards the finals,” says Greece’s mentor Ioannis Kalmazidis.
“Our main goal was to reach the semi-finals but now we are ready for the next step. Megalopolis is our base in this European League campaign and we would like to play our best in order to thank the people of the city for their help and support,” added Eleni Kiosi, captain of the Greek team.
“We are very happy because our women’s national team extended their presence in our city and I hope that together with my fellow citizens I will have the chance to host our girls again for the final stage of the competition next week. For the youth of Megalopolis, it is a unique experience to see every day their idols and that’s why I would like to thank the coach and his players for their remarkable behaviour during their stay in our city,” said the Mayor of Megalopolis.
