Slovenia seal eighth straight victory in men’s European League
2015 CEV Volleyball European League - Men

Craiova, Romania, August 1, 2015. On Saturday Slovenia extended their winning streak in the 2015 CEV Volleyball European League – Men to eight consecutive matches following their second straight-set victory over Romania in Craiova (25-21, 25-15, 27-25).

The first set started with Slovenia dominating the scene through excellent spikes by their outside spiker Jan Pokersnik and good blocks by Uros Pavlovic that propelled a five-point lead for the visitors at the first technical time-out (8:3). Romania tried to come back in the match with smart attacks killed by outside spiker Marian Bala but the Slovenian guys extended their margin to seven points at the second mandatory break (16:9) with some incredible attacks of Pokersnik supported by good reception contributed by his teammates. Romania tried to stop the Slovenian offensive but nothing seemed to work with the visitors eventually claiming the first set by 25-21.

The second set followed a similar plot. Romania seemed overwhelmed by the powerful spikes of Slovenia’s outside spiker Jan Pokersnik and the visitors set the pace of the game at both technical time-outs (8:7 and 16:10). Romania tried to balance the score through inspired spikes of their opposite Gabriel Cherbeleata but it was not enough. The amazing blocks by Uros Pavlovic and Pokersnik made it just easy for Slovenia that finished the second set at 25-15.

The third set started with Slovenia continuing their display of fine form and looking eager to close the match as quickly as possible. Again their outside spiker Jan Pokersnik and middle blocker Uros Pavlovic found the right way to ‘shake’ Romania’s defence and Slovenia went up by 8:7 at the first technical time-out. However, after the break Romania responded with better reception provided by their outside spiker Florin Balhaceanu and good spikes of opposite Gabriel Cherbeleata. This way the home side got to the front though by the narrowest margin at the second mandatory break (16:15). Gabriel Cherbeleata seemed to be able to put his side back on track but Slovenia sensing the danger recovered easily through Pokersnik who restored the balance in the set. Romania responded with the always relentless Cherbeleata and Mihai Gheorghita hit some more spikes that briefly put the Slovenian reception into trouble. However, after a close final rush, Pokersnik and his teammates got back control of the game and sealed their second 3:0 victory of the weekend at 27-25.
