Turkey vie for first European League win in Canakkale
2015 CEV Volleyball European League - Men

Canakkale, Turkey, July 23, 2015. After four consecutive defeats in two weeks, Turkey is determined to turn the tide around in their 2015 CEV Volleyball European League campaign. Turkey will be hosting the national team of Romania on Friday and Saturday for the third round of action in Pool B. The matches are taking place in the city of Canakkale right by the time this place is celebrating the hundredth anniversary since a legendary battle that was fought here in 1915 during World War I.

Turkey and Romania will face each other on July 24 and 25 with both matches starting at 19:00 local time.

A press conference was held on Thursday at Anafartalar Sports Hall where the games will be played.

CEV Supervisor Slobodan Milosevic, Competitions Director Nilüfer Shimonsky, Marketing Director Sezgin Eren and Turkey’s Team Manager Muhammet Görken attended the media meeting together with the captains and coaches of Turkey and Romania.

Nilüfer Shimonsky, who delivered the opening speech, said that the Turkish Volleyball Federation (TVF) are very happy to host the third-round matches of the European League in Canakkale. “I would like to address a very warm welcome to everybody. I am expecting very tough games and inviting everybody to Anafartalar Sports Hall.”

CEV Supervisor Slobodan Milosevic said that “Volleyball is the biggest sports family in the world and we are a part of it. We know that high-level Volleyball is on display in the European League. And two Balkan countries will face each other here in Canakkale. Thanks to the Turkish Volleyball Federation for the excellent organisation of this event.”

Turkey’s Team Manager Muhammet Görken said: “Our aim is to gain experience for the U23 World Championship. There are a lot of Volleyball fans in Canakkale and we want to see them in the hall for both matches.”

Romania coach Danut Pascu said: “We are very happy to be here. This is a very nice city and the hall is good as well. We are here to play good Volleyball. Turkey is a young and talented team. Good luck to everybody.”

Romania team captain Adrian Radu Gontariu added: “We want to go back to Romania with at least one victory. I am sure that both teams will do their best so there will be good matches for the audience as well.”

Turkey coach Emanuele Zanini said: “Our first goal is to gain experience for the U23 World Championship but we are here also to win our first game in the European League. We will try to play good Volleyball. All teams in this competition are very strong. And this is an important opportunity to improve our level.”

Turkey captain Caner Peksen concluded: “We had a good preparation period. And we noticed our weaknesses and have worked on that. We want to win both matches here in Canakkale.”
