Resovia cap fabulous season with seventh national league title
News from the clubs
Rzeszow, Poland, May 1, 2015. The silver medallists from this year’s CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League, Poland’s Asseco Resovia RZESZOW, capped a terrific season by claiming their seventh title in the country’s national league, and the first since they had topped the charts at the end of the 2012/2013 season. Resovia came back from behind but eventually scored a 3:1 win over Lotos Trefl GDANSK (19-25, 25-19, 27-25, 25-18) in the third round of the Championship series.
This was a spectacular season for Resovia as their second place in the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League where they only lost to Russia’s giant Zenit KAZAN equalled the best result to date achieved by a Polish team in Europe’s elite competition (PGE Skra BELCHATOW had also finished second in 2012). “We are simply happy and for me this has been the toughest season since I started working for Resovia four years ago,” said home mentor Andrzej Kowal. “We had ups and downs like in every other season but the strength of a team can be acknowledged once it ends the season in great style – with a gold medal – as we just did. I have always said that the Polish national league finals were going to be the climax of our season. Of course the second place in the CEV Volleyball Champions League is a great success too, but the most important thing was our last game in the PlusLiga.”
The match at Podpromie sports hall was accompanied by an amazing choreography prepared by the fans of Resovia – almost 5,000 were in attendance – who had produced a giant banner with the script ‘Our history becomes legend.’
Thousands of people gathered in front of the stage in the centre of Rzeszow and celebrated the title with their heroes.
After such great season, three players – Marko Ivovic, Rafal Buszek and Dawid Konarski – have decided to leave the team. “I think that before the start of this season only a few people would have reckoned with the results we eventually achieved. In fact, these two medals are a huge success. Personally I am satisfied with this season where I have done a good job with the team. Every single player had its share in this success. So far I can only say that I played with GDANSK my last match for Resovia. I am happy that I can leave this team with a gold medal around my neck,” Rafal Buszek said.
“It was a real pleasure to be a part of Asseco Resovia RZESZOW. I am sad because I am leaving but that’s life,” admitted Serbian outside spiker Marko Ivovic. “I wish all the best to the team and hope to see you all soon again! Asseco Resovia has the best fans in the world.”
So far Resovia has extended the contracts of Nikolay Penchev, Jochen Schöps, Piotr Nowakowski, Fabian Drzyzga, Lukas Tichacek, Aleh Akhrem as well as the cooperation with coach Andrzej Kowal.
