After missing out on Championship finals Buijs quits Atom Trefl
News from the clubs

Sopot, Poland, April 12, 2014. Dutch-born head coach Teun Buijs recently announced his decision not to lead Atom Trefl SOPOT in the Playoffs series for third and fourth place where the team will play Tauron Banimex DABROWA GORNICZA. Buijs, who has been with the team since last August, made this decision on his own stressing that this step back will hopefully improve the team’s spirit.

Buijs had moved to Poland after winning two consecutive titles in the German Bundesliga while working for the likes of SCHWERINER SC. He also mentored that same team in the 2012 and 2013 editions of the CEV Volleyball Champions League. However, his work with SOPOT did not live up to the expectations as the team failed to achieve all the goals set before the start of the current season. Atom did not make the final stage of the national league and did also miss out on a spot for the final match of the national cup. They also ended their European adventure in the Playoffs 12 of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League, thereby emulating the result achieved in the previous edition.

“After coming back from Wroclaw (where Atom lost to Impel in the semis) we had some talks since we wanted to find a reason for our low-level performance. We also tried to find a way to get over this disappointment and to prepare for the matches ahead since the bronze medal is extremely important for us,” says club President Roman Szczepan Kniter. “In the end he decided by himself to leave the team, hoping that this decision will have a good impact on the team as well as on the general ambiance. I respected his decision and agreed with the reasons he brought up. I would like to thank Buijs for his cooperation and the work he did with our team. I also would like to stress that I still admire his coaching philosophy and skills, though they did not work with our club.”

In the upcoming matches with DABROWA GORNICZA the Atomic girls will be guided by Buijs’ assistants, Tomasz Wasilkowski and Piotr Graban. The club is not going to hire any coach for the Playoffs and the name of the new mentor will be known only once the national league comes to a close.
