13/01/2014 18:14 Rookies CONEGLIANO and Omichka vie for a spot among the top six 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Women Treviso, Italy, January 13, 2014. Though they were making their first appearance in Europe’s elite competition, Italy’s rookies Prosecco Doc-Imoco CONEGLIANO could make it through the prelims after finishing second in Pool E edging there star-studded teams such as Galatasaray Daikin ISTANBUL and Azerbaijan’s Azeryol BAKU. Their next stop in the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women is set to follow on Wednesday evening as they host another rookie, namely Russia’s Omichka OMSK REGION, for the first round of the Playoffs 12. Prosecco Doc-Imoco CONEGLIANO has gone through ups and downs in the national league but after this weekend’s victory over CASALMAGGIORE, the “Panthers” – as they are dubbed in Italy – are currently ranked fourth. They are still missing their team captain Raffaella Calloni who underwent surgery after tearing her Achilles tendon but German middle-blocker Berit Kauffeldt has been replacing her very well lately. Opposite Emiliya Nikolova is also back with the group after qualifying for the Final Round of the 2014 World Championship with Bulgaria’s national team while Valentina Fiorin is also in good shape as shown by the 17 points she registered in the last round of the national league. “We are very excited and have been working hard for the next step of our European campaign” Fiorin says. “We want to continue with our positive streak also against the Russian team. It is not going to be easy because they have a wide array of great spikers but we feel ready to take on this difficult match. Many of us are playing for the first time in the Champions League and this is another reason to be extra motivated. We want to win on Wednesday so as to get the right edge before the return game coming up next week in Russia.”
