SOPOT needs only one set to book ticket to Playoffs 12
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Women

Sopot, Poland, December 15, 2013. Poland’s champions Atom Trefl SOPOT are only one set away from making the Playoffs 12 of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women. On Tuesday they only need to take one set from their game with Romania’s Dinamo Romprest BUCURESTI at the ERGO Arena to make the next stage while the guests need to seize the night in three straight sets to advance to the second phase of the competition.
This will be the very last game of the year 2013 for SOPOT and a re-match of the clash from some weeks ago where the Atomic girls edged Dinamo Romprest 3:1 in Romania. Still that game was very close and Dinamo could count on the excellent performance showed by their Bulgarian spiker Mariya Karakasheva. The match will be very special for SOPOT opposite Anna Podolec who spent some time in Romania playing for Dinamo a couple of years ago. “They are always very motivated and ready to fight” Podolec says about her former team. “I will do my best to help SOPOT claim another victory and make the Playoffs” she adds.

Podolec is gradually getting in shape after struggling for a few weeks. On Saturday she scored 28 points as SOPOT played a very dramatic game with their archrivals Tauron MKS DABROWA GORNICZA where these sides prolonged their rivalry from last year’s Championship series. The players mentored by Dutch head coach Teun Buijs were leading 2:1 and 19:15 in the fourth set before they eventually lost it 24-26. What’s more, because of their errors, they dissipated a 14:10 lead in the tie-break thereby losing the game (14-16). “It is only our fault because we fell asleep before the end of the fifth set. We need to reset and get over that failure” says wing spiker Klaudia Kaczorowska.

“We have to take our lesson from this kind of matches in order to perform better next time” says Teun Buijs. “We have been traveling a lot in recent times and the players are getting tired, so that by the key moments they are no longer fresh enough to make the right decisions. I think that in the future we will be able to cope with this much better.”

In the match with Dinamo Romprest, SOPOT will rely on Podolec who has scored 63 points so far in the League Round as well as on their always excellent libero Mariola Zenik and middle blocker Zuzanna Efimienko. On the other side of the net, Karakasheva will be leading the offense of the guests having registered 60 points so far in the competition.
