Siberian “Cats” claim fourth victory in their CL debut

Dresden, Germany, December 11, 2013. Russia’s rookies Omichka OMSK REGION claimed on Wednesday their fourth victory in the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women as they beat Germany’s DRESDNER SC 3:1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-20, and 25-18) before 1,850 fans in attendance at the Margon Arena. The home heroines still could show a very good performance taking their first set out of four matches against the powerhouses of the group, Rabita BAKU and Omichka.
The Russian giant caught a very good start (8:5) but DRESDNER SC fought bravely to find their way into the game. They first drew level at 12 all and after a close race they scored a few key points before their US American outside hitter Rebecca Perry killed two in a row to make it 25-21 in the end.
In the second set Omichka immediately set the pace and did lead by five points at the first technical time-out (8:5). DRESDNER SC head coach Alexander Waibl opted for a few changes but the local stars found it difficult to stand the attacks killed by Cuban Nancy Carrillo. A block by their setter Marina Babeshina ended the set at 25-15 for Omichka.
DRESDNER SC got back to their usual starting six for the opening of the third set but the Russian standout performed strong and set the pace of the game right from the go (8:6). DRESDNER SC could not really find their way back into the game and they quickly trailed 14:20. After surviving two set balls, DRESDNER SC had to surrender at 25-20 as Omichka captain Elena Yureva sealed the provisional 2:1 for the team from Siberia.
The fourth set turned into a very close fight where the hosts could keep the pace of their opponent up to 15 all. However, things changed as DRESDNER SC could not cope with the serves by Yureva and Omichka rapidly widened their lead up to 23:17 before Iuliia Kutiukova cashed the final 25-18 for a well-deserved 3:1 victory.
