VakifBank adds another chapter to unprecedented winning streak
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Women
Bucuresti, Romania, December 11, 2013. Turkey’s VakifBank ISTANBUL emulated their compatriots Eczacibasi VitrA and also Azerbaijan’s Rabita BAKU to score their fifth straight victory in the prelims of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League thereby also prolonging one of the most impressive winning streaks in the history of the sport (67 matches in a row). VakifBank downed Dinamo Romprest BUCURESTI of Romania in three sets (25-23, 25-21, and 25-17) to make sure they will finish the prelims atop the charts in Pool C.
The home heroines really wanted to give their fans something to cheer about but they eventually could not succeed in fulfilling their goal to take at least one set from this game.
The start of the first set was very close with all players scoring from almost every single position. After the score was drawn at 11, Tsvetelina Zarkova moved the tables up to 14:12 for Dinamo Romprest BUCURESTI but VakifBank had already flipped the charts around by the second technical time-out (15:16). The deciding moment came as the score stood at 22:23, where a mini-break claimed by Polen Uslupehlivan paved the way for the final 25-23 in favor of VakifBank.
The 2013 club world champions gradually accelerated their pace and did so in the early phases of the second set; Uslupehlivan helped VakifBank claim an 8:4 lead at the first technical time-out but Dinamo Romprest scored four in a row to make it 8 all as Zarkova was standing behind the service line. Dinamo mentor Marian Constantin stopped the game as his side was trailing 12:14 but he could not find a way to stop the march of VakifBank. The Turks moved the score up to 21:17 and they finished their job at 25-21 with great actions by Carolina Costagrande and Bahar Toksoy.
The guests from Turkey showed once again their value and class also in the third set where they quickly set the pace of the game (8:4) and well marshaled by their talented setter Naz Aydemir, the spikers of VakifBank killed one spike after the other to close the game on a block for another straight victory. Uslupehlivan and Costagrande top scored in the end with 17 points apiece while Mariya Karakasheva and Ioana Baciu registered 12 and 10 respectively for Dinamo Romprest.
“We tried to play our best but it was not enough even to win one set” said Dinamo Romprest General Manager Marian Stefan. “VakifBank deserved to win this game and they truly are a world-class team.”
“We had prepared for a very difficult match and a tough opponent, so we are not too disappointed even though tonight we lost in three sets” concluded team captain Diana Nenova.
