Volero hosts Romanian rookie while chasing for Playoffs spot
2014 CEV Denizbank Volleyball Champions League - Women

Zurich, Switzerland, December 10, 2013. With six points after four rounds Switzerland’s Volero ZURICH is currently ranked second in prelim Pool F of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women and therefore well in contention for a spot in the Playoffs 12. If they take three points from their upcoming home match with Romania’s rookie Stiinta BACAU, the Swiss would literally pave with gold their way to the next round of the competition. Their closest competitor Tauron MKS DABROWA GORNICZA are set to host Russian giant Dinamo KAZAN and need three points from that game to stay in the race for the Playoffs.
Last week Volero needed more than two hours to finally edge Tauron MKS at the tie-break with Olesya Rykhliuk scoring 30 points all alone. “It was a nervous and tense game with many errors from both sides” says Volero head coach Dragutin Baltic. “Stiinta BACAU is also still in contention for a spot in the Playoffs 12 and they have showed great fighting spirit in their matches with Dinamo KAZAN” adds the Slovenian mentor. “They also got the right boost of confidence at the end of October when they beat Volero.”

The team captain of Volero, Nneka Onyejekwe underwent appendix surgery two weeks ago straight after the match with Volley KÖNIZ. The Romanian middle blocker will most probably be out until the end of this month. She will be missing the last couple of rounds in the CL as well as the traditional end-of-the-year Women’s Top Volley International Tournament in Basel, where Volero will make their tenth appearance. To compensate for her absence, Volero just signed a contract with 19-year old Mira Todorova, a member of Bulgaria’s junior national team who will stay with the team up to the tournament in Basel before she joins Volero permanently for the start of the 2014/2015 season.

Volero will use the match coming up on Thursday to support a foster home in the city of Zurich. “The spectators will have to bring old balls to the sports hall. Everything goes around balls in our daily business and the staff of Volero is working hard to achieve the goals set by their management. With this charity action we will help children and give them hope for a better future” says Volero Marketing Manager Christian Bachmann. “We hope to collect as many balls as possible so as to bring a lot of joy to the guests of this foster home.”
