VakifBank cruises to 65th consecutive victory
2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League - Women

Istanbul, Turkey, December 4, 2013. VakifBank ISTANBUL added another chapter to their success story as they prolonged their winning streak to 65 matches after they routed Atom Trefl SOPOT of Poland in straight sets (25-22, 25-20, and 25-12) for the fourth round of action in prelim Pool C of the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League – Women. The winners of last year’s edition and gold medalists from the 2013 FIVB Club World Champs top the charts in their group with maximum points – 12 – after four rounds.
VakifBank imposed their pace right from the start of the game (8:4) but SOPOT fought their way back to shortly claim the lead (11:12); however, VakifBank had already got back control of the game by the time the second technical time-out was called (16:14) and scored another four in a row to make it 20:14 before cashing the opening set at 25-22.
The story repeated itself in the second set where VakifBank started out strong (8:6, 16:11) but SOPOT bounced back with a series of good blocks to reduce their gap to a minimum (19:18). Still this attempt was not enough to stop the march of Turkey’s giant that wrapped it up at 25-20.
VakifBank then dominated the scene from the start up to the end in the third set cruising to a speedy 25-12 to seal their 65th consecutive victory as Christiane Fürst top scored with 13 points.

“After we could stabilize our side-out we played a great game” VakifBank mentor Giovanni Guidetti commented. “Our block and defense were good tonight so this way we could control the serve of our opponent.”
“They really served very well tonight but we also recovered quickly and found a way to impose our pace” said VakifBank team captain Gözde Sonsirma Kirdar. “Sometimes we dropped a bit our focus so that the opponent team could exploit this to make the score much closer.”

“We used a lot of energy to come back in the first as well as in the second set. We could not do the same in the third because we wanted to save some fuel, so to speak, for the matches that are coming up in the national league” said SOPOT head coach Teun Buijs.
“It is very difficult to play here especially with their supporters being so loud and passionate. We played pretty good in the first and second set but in the end we made very stupid mistakes” stated Atom Trefl team captain Izabela Belcik.
