Russia and Greece claim speedy wins on opening day in Anapa
2013 FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship - European Qualification
Anapa, Russia, May 7, 2013. Russia and Greece got a very promising start of their campaign in Anapa where the local Volley Grad is playing host to a tournament whose winner will make it to the 2013 FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship scheduled for late August in Ankara and Izmir, Turkey. The hosts of Russia – who last year finished only fifth at the European Championship in Gdynia – presented their head coach Sergey Shlyapnikov with a perfect gift for his birthday by routing Denmark in three straight sets (25-13, 25-17, and 25-22).
Victor Poletaev – recently voted MVP of the 2013 CEV Youth Volleyball European Championship – Boys in Laktasi where Russia won gold – paced the home side by scoring 11 points.
With Austria resting on the first day, Greece claimed the other match on schedule by cruising past Montenegro in straight sets as well (25-18, 25-15, and 25-16). Georgios Tzioumakas was the real star of the game top scoring with 16 points, including 4 blocks and 2 aces.
