DRESDNER SC extends contract of head coach and two key players
News from the clubs
Dresden, Germany, March 20, 2012. With the deciding stages of the Bundesliga approaching quite quickly, DRESDNER SC extended the contract of head coach Alexander Waibl for two more years, up to 2015. As he is about to turn 44, this was quite a special birthday present for the man that has been mentoring the club since 2009.
“The Board of our club has been discussing very thoroughly this issue and we have quite many plans for the future. Alexander Waibl has got the kind of fire that we are looking for. He is someone who always devotes maximum effort to achieve the goals he has set” says club President Jörg Dittrich.
This was not the only decision recently made in Dresden, as team captain Stefanie Karg (26 years of age) and Anne Matthes (25), a member of Germany’s national team, did also already sign for DRESDNER SC for another season. The middle blocker and wing spiker are home-grown players, as they started their career with the club from Saxony, even though Matthes got back this past fall after spending the last couple of seasons in Italy. “Everything was just perfect this year in Dresden; I feel very well here and that’s why I did not want to go for a change. There is a great professionalism and team spirit here, something I have experienced only with the national team” says Matthes. “She is a real leader out there on the court” stresses coach Waibl while speaking about Matthes. “She brings a lot of experience and I know that she still has much potential to improve even more”.
Stefanie Karg has been with the team since 2003 and is seen by Waibl as the most effective middle blocker of the Bundesliga. “This is a great sign that the club believes in us and is supporting us” she says after prolonging her contract for the next season. “Stefanie, Anne and Mareen Apitz are very popular among our fans, they have won their hearts and everyone comes to the sports hall to see them play” adds club President Jörg Dittrich.
While Apitz is already contracted also for next year and the same applies to youngsters Katharina Schwabe and Silvia Sperl, some negotiations shall start very soon with the 34-year old libero Kerstin Tzscherlich, the real veteran of the roster. If she remains fit, the extension of the contract shall be a pure formality. As for Dutch ladies Judith Pietersen and Robin de Kruijf, discussions still have to unfold to determine their future.
Head coach Waibl – who is preparing the first match of the Playoffs scheduled for this Saturday against Smart Allianz STUTTGART – is excited about the above news. “I also feel very well here in Dresden and while we continue to integrate young players, it is good to keep also some veterans in our group”.
