Iraklis needs home win to go for Playoffs ticket
2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Men

Thessaloniki, Greece, January 9, 2012. Iraklis THESSALONIKI got a good boost of confidence for the next round of action in the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League by beating Olympiacos PIRAEUS in Athens, thereby getting ready for the home clash with CSKA SOFIA. Iraklis has a winning streak of 11 matches in the national league and now needs a clear win over CSKA to achieve its goal to make it to the Playoffs 12 of Europe’s most elitist competition.
Iraklis will be missing main setter Kostas Prousalis and two Latvian national players, Ansis Medenis and Viktors Korzenevics. Medenis needs a shoulder surgery while Korzenevics has left Greece to move to Germany and play there for TV BUHL. Cuban-born Rolando Despaigne will debut for Iraklis in the European Cups after pacing his side in the last two matches of the national league scoring 19 and 21 points.
“This game will be more difficult than the one in Sofia because the teams have undergone some changes in their roster” says coach Sotirios Drikos. “CSKA SOFIA played a good game with Noliko MAASEIK but I think we can win with the help of our fans” he adds.
“It is a very important game for our European campaign” stresses captain Nikolaos Smaragdis. “We need two more wins to achieve our goal to advance to the Playoffs 12. But first we have to concentrate on the match with CSKA SOFIA”.
