CAI TERUEL scores first win over Partizan
2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men
Teruel, Spain, December 14, 2011. CAI TERUEL scored tonight its first win in the prelims of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League by beating Partizan Termoelektro BEOGRAD of Serbia 3:1 (25-14, 25-14, 18-25, 26-24). The match was extremely important to maintain some chances to qualify for the Playoffs 12 with the return coming up next week in Serbia.
The match started pretty well for the home side (16:10) that rapidly cruised to the final 25-14 by clipping 9 blocks along the way while Partizan registered a poor 14% of efficiency in attack. The guests displayed some more consistency, especially in defense, in the opening of set 2 but after the first mandatory stop CAI TERUEL took many risks from the serving line thereby keeping the attackers of Partizan away from the net for a second 25-14.
Things changed in the third set where Partizan went up by the first technical time-out (5:8); even though local head coach Oscar Novillo opted for some changes, still the guests were not to stop and pocketed that section of the game with the score of 18-25. CAI TERUEL got back on track in set 4 (8:6, 16:11) but Partizan clawed back for the 19 all, even turning the score around at 20:22. The hosts fought back to level at 22 and after a heart-beating final rush, they wrapped it up at 26-24 for the final 3:1.
James Matthew Webber paced CAI TERUEL with 23 points while Aleksandar Minic top scored for Partizan with 16.
