VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN celebrates thrilling home debut
2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men
Friedrichshafen, Germany, October 26, 2011. VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN claimed tonight its home debut in the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League: in front of 2’000 spectators in the “ZF Arena” the German champion beat Belgian rookie Euphony ASSE-LENNIK in a thrilling four-setter (25-27, 29-27, 42-40, 25-18).
The match lasted for almost two and a half hours but it could not have been more exciting. Both teams showed an amazing fight which needed altogether 29 set balls to finish the four sets.
Especially the third set offered an incredible dramaturgy. ASSE-LENNIK went away till 12:16, 17:21 and 20:23. But again and again FRIEDRICHSHAFEN came close to 15:16 and 20:21 and equalized for the first time at 23:23. Finally the Belgians could not use one of their 11 set balls while the Germans finished it off with their seventh attempt at the record score of 42-40.
“It was a match which could have been won by both teams”, said FRIEDRICHSHAFEN coach Stelian Moculescu. “There were permanent ups and downs on both sides. Finally we won and I am confident for the next matches”.
Like Moculescu also ASSE-LENNIK coach Marko Klok had to try to find his countenance after the match. “During the first three sets FRIEDRICHSHAFEN won only two points more than us”, he stated. “Both teams had a lot of chances which they could not use. The third set used too much of our energy so the difference became too big at the end”.
Finally it was Oliver Venno who finished the match. The 2.10 meters tall Estonian opposite from FRIEDRICHSHAFEN totaled 29 points turning into the best scorer tonight. In spite of it he was not quite satisfied with the performance. “It was not my best game – I can play better”, he said. “I got a lot of balls. So it is not easy to make no mistakes”.
With better feelings FRIEDRICHSHAFEN Thomas Jarmoc left the court. “It felt really good helping the team”, he said. “The guys played hard and stayed focused. The match was ridiculously stressful. I felt like being on a rollercoaster”.
