23/10/2011 19:31 CSKA SOFIA anticipates showdown with Iraklis THESSALONIKI 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men Sofia, Bulgaria, October 23, 2011. In the eve of the second round in Pool A Bulgaria’s CSKA SOFIA is determined to achieve its first win in the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League. The game with Iraklis THESSALONIKI will be historical for the whole Bulgarian Volleyball community as it will be the first official Volleyball match to be played in the new multifunctional sports hall in Sofia – “Arena Armeec” – which was officially opened in the summer with a friendly match between the national teams of Bulgaria and Serbia. Although it is not expected that it will be full as its total capacity stands at 12’500 spectators, there is no doubt that the fans of the Bulgarian champion will create a unique atmosphere to stimulate the players from both teams to give their best. Still missing from the starting line-up of CSKA SOFIA will be the libero of the national team Teodor Salparov. He underwent a knee surgery in April 2011 and is still recovering. The highly experienced player is already training at almost full regime but is expected to be back on court for an official match in November and thus will help the team in the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League only starting from December. “We are going into the match with Iraklis with a great respect to our opponent and my players are determined to give their best to entertain our fans”, comments the head coach of CSKA SOFIA, Aleksandar Popov. Iraklis THESSALONIKI and CSKA SOFIA were assigned to the same Pool in the prelims of the CEV Volleyball Champions League also in the 2008/2009 season. At that time the Greek side registered two wins in straights sets. Later on in the competition Iraklis led by the captain of the Bulgarian national team Plamen Konstantinov reached the final losing only to Italy’s TRENTINO Volley in Prague.
