Triple champion TRENTINO outplays determined CAI TERUEL
2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men
Trento, Italy, October 20, 2011. Triple European and World champion TRENTINO PlanetWin365 edged tonight CAI TERUEL of Spain in straight sets (25-22, 26-24, and 25-14) to open its campaign in Pool C of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League with the right mood.
In the opening set the hosting team set the rhythm of the game, but at 16:9 the Spaniards of CAI TERUEL displayed some very good defense and thanks to the efficient attacks of José Miguel Sugranes and James Matthew Webber made things more difficult for TRENTINO. Czech giant Jan Stokr finally stopped that negative trend and led the Italians to the final 25-22.
CAI TERUEL started the second set with a lot of determination and this section of the game was played point for point up to a tie at 21. Thanks to some good tricks TERUEL initially took control of the money time at 22:23. Two powerful attacks of the Cuban-born spiker Osmany Juantorena got back control of the operations for TRENTINO thereby seizing the set at 26-24.
In the third set the Italians led all the way through (20:10), keeping up their high level of play and pocketing the victory in straight sets (25-14).
MVP of the match was Jan Stokr (pictured) with 61% of efficiency in attack and 18 points.
“I’m satisfied with this win. Today the important thing was to remain concentrated all through the match and to not suffer any injuries. CAI TERUEL is not a team that may be considered at the same level as the top sides in the Italian national league but they played a good game. My aim right now is to recover at the best the players that are somehow tired after a fully packed calendar” stated the mentor of TRENTINO, Radostin Stoytchev.
“It was a difficult match because of the team we were in front of. I am sure we could go to the fourth set but in the third one the concentration went down but our game was not bad at all. We have a positive feeling for this competition and I think we played a good match tonight” said his colleague of CAI TERUEL, Oscar Novillo.
In the next match of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Champions League, scheduled for October 25, TRENTINO will play Serbia’s Partizan Termoelektro BEOGRAD.
