Luxembourg, March 25, 2021. No one said it would be easy. But Wednesday night was insane, as Grupa Azoty Kedzierzyn-Kozle and Trentino Itas booked their tickets to the Super Finals of the CEV Champions League Volley 2021. And both did it the hard way.
Mighty Zenit Kazan had dropped five match points in the first leg at home to lose in five sets to Kedzierzyn-Kozle. With that result in their pockets, the Polish side were leading 2-1 in the return leg when they themselves blew five match points in the fourth. And then another two in the ensuing fifth, as Zenit came back to take the tie into a 'Golden Set'.
In the end, Kedzierzyn-Kozle avoided a taste of their own medicine, advancing to their first ever Champions League final and becoming the first Polish side in six years to play for the title (after Asseco Resovia Rzeszow lost to Zenit in the 2015 final).
Six-time European champions Zenit will now be without a title for at least four years.

Trentino didn't take the quick road to Verona either. Their win in the first leg at home over Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia in straight sets meant they only needed to win two in the return match on Wednesday night to make it to their first Champions League final since 2016 (and fifth overall).
But the Italian derby was never going to be easy and Trentino found themselves trailing by two sets - Perugia apparently sailing towards forcing the second 'Golden Set' of the night.
Somehow, Trentino clawed back to take the next two - just enough to see them through - before, as it is customary, the reserves were brought in for the by now irrelevant tie-break and Perugia went on to take the match on the night.

years and get a shot at their fourth title.
The Champions League semifinals have come to haunt Perugia, who fail to come out of the top four for the third time running, after losing to Zenit in both 2018 and 2019.
But Trentino now have the chance to go for their fourth Champions League title - which would tie the overall record by any Italian team, alongside Modena and Treviso - if we are to take into account titles claimed in the former CEV Champions Cup.
