Poland keep perfect record as Belarus edge Serbia in Zenica
CEV U19 Volleyball European Championship 2020

Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, August 23, 2020. On Sunday, Poland beat Slovakia 3-0 (27-25, 25-15, 25-18) to keep an immaculate record in Pool I of #EuroVolleyU19W, with matches taking place at the iconic Arena Zenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Later in the evening, Belarus edged Serbia 3-2 (16-25, 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13) to celebrate their first victory in the competition after not playing any matches on Saturday. Slovakia and Belarus will lock horns on Monday afternoon, before Serbia will take on hosts Bosnia and Herzegovina at 8 pm local time.

Poland vs. Slovakia 3-0 (27-25, 25-15, 25-18)

After routing Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday, Poland had to work hard in the first set of their matchup with Slovakia, but after this second straight victory, they are yet to drop a set in the competition.

Wieslaw Popik, head coach of Poland: “It was not easy at all. It took time for us to start playing our game and we made many service errors. In the second set, we had a 7-0 run and this made the difference. We will continue one match at a time; there is still a lot ahead of us, and we hope for a medal.”

Jaroslav Hancak, head coach of Slovakia: “We have a young team. When we play under stress, it is even harder and we make more mistakes. Poland has a better defence than Serbia. They play very fast in attack. It was harder for us to play against them than against Serbia yesterday.”

Two wins in two matches for Team Poland in Pool I this far

Belarus vs. Serbia 3-2 (16-25, 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13)

Belarus came back from losing the first set and again after dropping the fourth to edge Serbia in a dramatic tiebreaker.

Milan Gršić, head coach of Serbia: “There were many ups and downs tonight. At times, we showed a very high-level game and little things made the difference in the end. I can only congratulate the Belarusian team as well as my own team on their performance and resilience. We showed a much better game than we did yesterday. I can be satisfied with many things, but the result is important. Today we failed to achieve a positive result but we have to move on. We will try to beat Bosnia and Poland and wait for the other results to see where we will end in this pool.”

Volha Palcheuskaya, head coach of Belarus: “I am very satisfied with the result. It was an extremely difficult match and it is a very important victory. It is hard to play against tall girls who have a great spike and a great block. We played great in defence. Every team wants to win, so do we. I hope that we will play well in the continuation of the championship, and if the opportunity arises, we will fight for a medal.”
