Quick straight sets victories highlight #EuroVolleyU17W day 4
CEV U17 Volleyball European Championship 2020

Podgorica, Montenegro, October 5, 2020. The five matches scheduled for Monday at #EuroVolleyU17W in Podgorica all ended in comprehensive victories in straight sets for the pre-favourite teams. Turkey and Italy cemented their first and second place in Pool I with a quick shutout of Slovakia and hosts Montenegro – with Slovenia needing three sets to beat Bulgaria and improve their win-loss record to 2-2. Russia are the only team with a perfect record in Pool II after routing Serbia, while Poland celebrated their first victory in the competition in the matchup with Romania. The pool stage ends on Tuesday with the last five matches – these will define the composition of the semis as well as of the classification matches for places 5-8.

Pool I

Slovakia vs. Turkey 0-3 (11-25, 15-25, 17-25)

Turkey further cemented their leadership in Pool I with a fourth straight victory in as many matches, as they comprehensively dispatched Slovakia in three quick sets in the opening match played at Verde sports complex on Monday afternoon. Melisa Ege Bükmen top scored once more for Turkey with 12 points, as Deana Valentova registered seven for Slovakia.

Bulgaria vs. Slovenia 0-3 (20-25, 25-27, 15-25)

Slovenia improved their win-loss record in the tournament to 2-2 as they claimed a 3-0 victory in their matchup with Bulgaria. Slovenia were close to losing the second set, but they could rose to the occasion and after that, everything went just smoothly for the team that finished fourth at last year’s U16 championship in Trieste. Iva Dudova top scored in the match as she registered 16 points for Bulgaria, while Taja Gradisnik Klanjscek paced Slovenia with 14.

Montenegro vs. Italy 0-3 (13-25, 13-25, 16-25)

The hosts from Montenegro did not stand any real chance against Italy, with the ‘Azzurrine’ recording a comprehensive 3-0 victory in 57 minutes only. Giulia Polesello was the standout performer for Italy as she registered 14 points for the winners, as Natalija Vlaovic top scored for Montenegro on a personal tally of seven points. Montenegro are yet to win a match in Pool I and they will finish their duties on Tuesday playing reigning U16 European champions Turkey at 8 pm local time.

Pool II

Poland vs. Romania 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-17)

Poland were yet to record their first victory in the competition and they eventually achieved this feat against Romania to stay in contention for a spot in the classification matches 5-8. Poland claimed a very close first set (25-23) before they looked more dominant in the subsequent two sets. Karolina Staniszewska top scored for the young Poles with 14 points, as Lidia-Paula Partnoi recorded 11 points for Romania in their losing effort.

Russia vs. Serbia 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-23)

Russia recorded their third straight victory in Pool II as they beat Serbia in three sets. Russia’s captain Arina Fedorovtseva scored 21 points to claim the ‘duel’ with Serbia’s best scorer Aleksandra Uzelac, who finished the match on a personal tally of 18 points. Russia have lost one set only in the competition this far, as they hope to improve on the bronze medal they seized at last year’s U16 tournament in Trieste, Italy.
