Russia complete clean sweep to qualify for #EuroVolleyU17W
News from the Zonal Associations
Tbilisi, Georgia, November 28, 2019. History repeated itself at the EEVZA U16 Women’s Championship since Russia claimed on Wednesday the title again – just as they did last year in Olecko, Poland. Russia did so without losing even a set again, despite the effort the Polish girls made in the second set, where they were even leading 18-16. It was not enough, however, to prevent Russia from securing a comprehensive 3-0 victory (25-16, 27-25, 25-6) and with it qualification for the Final Round of next year’s U17 European Championship in Podgorica, Montenegro.
Belarus improved from the fifth place they claimed last year to the third step of the podium and took the bronze medals home. Their game against Ukraine was the most dramatic of the whole tournament held in Tbilisi at the Volleyball Hall named after 1964 Olympic champion Vazha Kacharava. Belarus eventually edged Ukraine at the tiebreak (24-26, 12-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-8) after coming back from two sets down.
Estonia beat Latvia 3-0 to claim fifth place while Lithuania edged hosts Georgia 3-1 to finish seventh.
