Swietelsky BÉKÉSCSABA reach #CEVChallengeCupW quarterfinals
CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2020 - Women

Békéscsaba, Hungary, February 7, 2020. Swietelsky BÉKÉSCSABA continued on Thursday night their campaign in the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2020 with a home match against Calcit Volley KAMNIK. Two weeks ago, the Hungarians had secured a 3-0 away victory and therefore they needed to take two sets ‘only’ to make it to the quarterfinals of the competition – which they did, despite a rather shaky start to the match.

The Slovenians had recently transferred a player from the Italian national league to show their determination to fight for a spot in the next stage of the event. The visitors started the re-match with Swietelsky at a very good pace and this combined with many mistakes by the home side, resulted in Calcit Volley securing a 25-22 win.

The very experienced Mia Jerkov helped the home side regroup and find their way back into the game. Jerkov and Tanja Grbic made sure that their whole team would rise to the occasion and after taking sets 2 and 3, the hosts and their fans could celebrate their qualification for the quarterfinals of the Challenge Cup.

After this, head coach Vasja Samec Lipicer gradually substituted the starters with the second lines, and halfway through the fourth set, only Hungarian youngsters were standing on the home side of the net. A great fight ensued; the fans supported the less experienced players wearing the shirt of Swietelsky but Calcit Volley emerged victorious at 25-23. The tiebreaker was another close affair, where another local talent, Greta Szucs, made her debut, with the hosts triumphing at 15-12.

The next opponent in the competition for Swietelsky will be Olympiacos PIRAEUS of Greece. The first match will be taking place on February 18, 2020 from 6 pm in the Békéscsaba Sports Hall, while the return match in Athens will follow on March 3.
