Turkish rookies record comprehensive victory in European Cups debut

Kaposvar, Hungary, November 7, 2019. The 2020 edition of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women started this week with a series of fixtures scheduled for the qualification round. On Wednesday night, 1. MCM-Diamant KAPOSVARI of Hungary lost to THY ISTANBUL of Turkey 0-3 (19-25, 23-25, 16-25) at home in a matchup featuring two European Cups rookies.
It was the very first international match for the hosts from Hungary, who were nevertheless able to put up a fight against the star-studded team sponsored by Turkish Airlines. The players coached by Sasa Nedeljkovic could even claim a 19-15 advantage in the second set before losing it 23-25. The match eventually ended in a 3-0 victory for the visitors from Turkey after 76 minutes of play. Sara Klisura, the Serbia-born player of KAPOSVARI, top scored in the game with 18 points, as Dutchwoman Anne Buijs recorded 17 for THY ISTANBUL.
The re-match will be taking place in Istanbul on November 19, with the winners of this double header moving to the Round of 32 to play there Spain’s Ibsa CV CCO 7 PALMAS.
Elsewhere, Olympiacos PIRAEUS, winners of the competition in 2018, stormed to a 3-0 victory in the Greek derby with AOF Porfyras PIRAEUS, Volley LUGANO needed three sets only to edge Finland’s LP Vampula HUITTINEN and SIP SEMPETER of Slovenia claimed the MEVZA derby with Slovakia’s VTC PEZINOK in three sets as well.
