LA LAGUNA leave #CEVCupW with their heads held high
CEV Volleyball Cup 2020 - Women

La Laguna, Spain, February 6, 2020. Sanaya Libby’s LA LAGUNA say goodbye to the European Cups this season after suffering a 1-3 home setback at the hands of Grupa Azoty Chemik POLICE of Poland. Some 850 fans and the remarkable fighting spirit shown by the local ‘Lionesses’ were not enough to pose a threat to such an elite opponent – and LA LAGUNA will now have to focus entirely on their domestic league. POLICE, on the other hand, have qualified for the quarterfinals of the CEV Cup, where they will be playing Mladost ZAGREB of Croatia.

After securing a 3-0 home victory two weeks ago in Poland, Chemik set the pace of the game right from the go - but the local favourites fought bravely to keep the score close up to 5-5. The first set continued the very same way until Brooke Kranda secured a dramatic 27-25 win for the home side.

The Polish team did not give up and responded well, with Agnieszka Bednarek helping the visitors to edge ahead at 12-9. Even though the hosts put up a real fight, they paid a high price for their own mistakes as POLICE claimed the second set 25-22.

It was not too much of a setback for LA LAGUNA, as the Spaniards were able to stay in contention up to 9-9 in the third set. However, POLICE slowly but surely broke away and a 25-17 win meant that they secured their spot in the quarterfinals. They did not relax at all though, even though LA LAGUNA briefly edged ahead in the fourth set with the help of Mame Fatou Diouf (14-12). Yet, with a very impressive team effort and the contribution of Pola Nowakowska, POLICE triumphed 3-1 to celebrate their progression to the #CEVCupW quarterfinals on a high note.
