Asterix claim dramatic first round of Belgian derby in #CEVCupW 8th Finals

Oostende, Belgium, January 23, 2020. Asterix Avo BEVEREN needed five sets to claim the first round of the Belgian derby with Hermes Rekkenshop OOSTENDE in the 8th Finals of the CEV Volleyball Cup 2020 – Women. The matchup featured the reigning Belgian national champions – BEVEREN – and national cup titleholders – OOSTENDE – who delivered a dramatic game with a spot in the quarterfinals of the CEV Cup at stake. Asterix Avo BEVEREN eventually emerged victorious 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 16-14) after more than two hours of action to claim a small edge ahead of the return game.
Asterix caught a flying start (10-6, 21-12) and even though Hermes fought their way back to 17-21, the visitors took the first set 25-19. After a close start to the second set (6-6), Hermes broke away (12-8), thus keeping their advantage until the end (25-21). The score remained close up to 9-all in the third set where Nina Coolman and Barbara Zakoscielna helped the home side towards a positive run that moved the score from 14-12 to 21-14 in their favour. BEVEREN cut their deficit to 23-19 and 24-21 but Hermes eventually had the upper hand. Manon Stragier and Marlies Janssens set the pace of the game for Asterix in the fourth set, turning an early 2-5 deficit into an 11-6 lead. Even though Hermes levelled the score at 20-all, Asterix called for a tiebreaker where they eventually secured their hard-fought 3-2 victory (16-14).
The return match will be taking place on February 5, 2020 in Beveren.
