SAAREMAA VC rise to the occasion to secure historic qualification to #CEVChallengeCupM quarterfinals
CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2020 - Men
Almeria, Spain, February 14, 2020. SAAREMAA VC achieved a truly historic feat on Thursday night, since their 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 25-16) away victory over Unicaja Costa de ALMERIA propels the team from Estonia’s largest island into the quarterfinals of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2020 – Men, where they will be playing Italy’s Allianz Powervolley MILANO. SAAREMAA VC could make up for their 2-3 home loss from two weeks ago in Kuressaare, with their Brazilian opposite hitter Daniel De Souza Maciel top scoring with 20 points.
The Cuban-born star of SAAREMAA VC, Javier Jimenez Scull, made the difference in the first set with some truly impressive serves, and with a series of mighty blocks, the visitors stormed to a 25-20 win. The second set followed the same plot, with SAAREMAA VC standing out with their blocking and serving game, leading by 15-8 on the way to a 25-19 score line.
The hosts coached by Manuel Berenguel responded well in the third set and using their serve to put pressure on the opponent, they secured a 25-19 win of their own – much to the delight of some 1,200 home fans. The Spaniards seemed very motivated to go for the tiebreak but an injury sustained by Francisco Iribarne affected the home side – and SAAREMAA VC stormed comfortably to a 25-16 win that sealed their spot in the quarterfinals.
