12 elite teams to feature in European Golden League – Pools announced
CEV Volleyball European Golden League 2019

Luxembourg, December 13, 2018. Twelve top teams will contest the 2019 edition of the CEV Volleyball European Golden League, starting their journey in a pool stage where they will be playing three home and three away matches. The top three teams from each pool plus the organisers of the Final Four will progress to the last stage of the competition, whose winners and runners-up will take home € 125,000 and € 80,000 prize money respectively and the right to represent Europe in the 2019 FIVB Challenger Cup.

The composition of the three pools reflects the latest European Ranking for national teams – i.e. the updated one following the FIVB Volleyball World Championships held earlier this year in Italy / Bulgaria and Japan. Click here for the latest European Ranking for national teams.

In the men’s competition, 2018 European Golden League winners Estonia will play the Netherlands, Spain and Croatia in Pool B. Croatia have moved up to the Golden League after taking top honours from the 2018 Silver League.

In the women’s competition, with titleholders Bulgaria having moved to the Volleyball Nations League after winning the FIVB Challenger Cup in Peru, 2018 silver medal winners Hungary will be taking on Croatia, France and Austria in Pool B. Last year’s bronze medallists Czech Republic will play 2017 European League winners Ukraine, Slovakia and 2018 Silver European League gold medallists Sweden in Pool A.

The competition will start on May 25-26 and after six legs it will reach its climax on June 21-22 and 22-23 with the women’s and men’s Finals. The CEV will be announcing the organisers of the respective events in due course.

The 2019 edition will carry a new logo to reflect the steady and continuous re-branding of all CEV competitions and activities.

CEV President Aleksandar Boričić invited all National Federations to work hard for the promotion of the event and of Volleyball as well: “We are happy with the results we achieved in 2018 in terms of broadcasting, but there is still room for improvement in terms of attendance to the matches. We invite you to make plans on how to promote Volleyball in your respective countries, to make the European League a truly international event and reflect the high-level status resulting from the investment made by the CEV in terms of prize money. Let us work together to provide the fans with the best possible experience as they enjoy the opportunity to follow your very best Volleyball players as they perform on home soil.”
