Saugella MONZA vie for Italy’s first #CEVChallengeCupW crown in 10 years
2019 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Women
Monza, Italy, March 26, 2019. Italy’s Saugella MONZA need to take two sets from their re-match with AYDIN BBSK to secure what would be a historic achievement in their maiden appearance in the European Cups. Moreover, Saugella MONZA would become the first Italian team to seize the title of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup since Vini Monteschiavo JESI did so in 2009. AYDIN BBSK, on the other hand, vie for Turkey’s fourth crown in the competition – after VakifGünes Sigorta ISTANBUL won it in 2008, while BURSA BBSK topped the charts in 2015 and 2017.
• Saugella MONZA start from their 3-0 victory in Turkey last week. They are yet to lose a match in the competition.
• This is the first participation in the European Cups for the two teams – even though AYDIN have inherited the rights of former Challenge Cup winners BURSA BBSK.
• AYDIN BBSK have come back already once after losing the first round in one of their previous fixtures – doing so against Besiktas ISTANBUL.
• Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez of AYDIN BBSK is the top scorer in this year’s Challenge Cup with 178 points. Serena Ortolani leads the way for Saugella MONZA on 101.
• Rachael Adams was the best player and blocker of the first match in Turkey with four stuffs.
Miguel Angel Falasca, head coach of Saugella MONZA: “It will not be an easy match. We have seen a few times already that the second leg can deliver some surprises. That is for sure the most important game of the entire competition, because the trophy is at stake. We need to think point by point, remain focussed on the match and try to play our Volleyball. They serve really well: therefore, we have to pay attention to this, and we should not underestimate this aspect of the game. The warmth and passion of our supporters will be really important throughout the whole match.”
Mustafa Umut Uysal, head coach of AYDIN BBSK: “In the first match, we could not show our best performance. We started to play at a good level in the second set, but we were not able to keep going in the third. We think that we were ready from a tactical standpoint. We have some regrets because of the many easy mistakes that we made; we have to be more stable from a mental standpoint. We studied MONZA through videos and we know what we should do, starting with making fewer mistakes than we made in Turkey.”
