Yamamay, BÉKÉSCSABA, OLOMOUC record home wins to make #CEVCupW quarterfinals
2019 CEV Volleyball Cup - Women

Luxembourg, January 25, 2019. Three teams secured on Thursday night their spot in the quarterfinals of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Cup – Women. These are Yamamay e-work BUSTO ARSIZIO of Italy, Swietelsky BÉKÉSCSABA of Hungary and VK UP OLOMOUC of Czech Republic. They all used the home-court advantage to confirm their away victories from previous matches with opponents from Austria, Switzerland and Belgium.

Swietelsky BÉKÉSCSABA (HUN) vs. Sm’ AESCH Pfeffingen (SUI) 3-1 (25-18, 15-25, 25-17, 25-17)

•    After a 3-2 away victory in Switzerland, the five-time national champions of Hungary claimed a 3-1 home win and with it a spot in the quarterfinals.
•    After a close start, the hosts broke away for 15-11 and 19-13; the visitors put up a fight towards the end of the first set, cutting their deficit to four points only, but eventually the Hungarian team seized a 25-18 win.
•    The visitors responded by taking a 17-10 lead in the second set and despite substitutions on the Hungarian side of the net, the hosts lost the set at 15-25.
•    The Hungarian champions stormed back in set three for a compelling 9-1 lead; they were able to hold on to it (19-8) and with the help of Nikoleta Perovic (top scorer in the end with an impressive tally of 26 points), they secured a 25-17 win.
•    After taking a 12-8 advantage in the fourth set, Swietelsky had to stand a comeback by the Swiss team (18-17). A time-out by their coach helped the hosts regroup and they scored seven points in a row to seize another 25-17 win to seal their 3-1 home victory.

Bogdan Paul, head coach of Swietelsky BÉKÉSCSABA: “I am really happy about my team’s performance especially as they followed the tactical instructions we had discussed and agreed upon before the game. We had our rollercoaster ride in the second set, but they managed to pick up the pace again in the third and fourth. I wish the best of luck to the Swiss team for their national league.”

Andreas Vollmer, head coach of Sm’ AESCH Pfeffingen: “I was totally convinced that we would win today here in Hungary, so that we would go to a Golden Set or qualify directly for the next round, since we got stronger since our previous match with BÉKÉSCSABA back in December. The belief was not so strong today from the side of my players; all of our hesitations killed us in the end.”

Yamamay e-work BUSTO ARSIZIO (ITA) vs. UVC Holding GRAZ (AUT) 3-1 (25-15, 25-12, 23-25, 25-22)

•    Yamamay played this match without Martina Samadan, the latest addition to their roster since the Croatian already featured in the European Cups earlier this season with the shirt of Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO.
•    Kaja Grobelna and Sara Bonifacio enjoyed some rest.
•    Yamamay easily won the first and second sets to secure their spot in the quarterfinals.
•    Vittoria Piani and Alessia Gennari paced Yamamay towards the desired result.
•    The match lost any meaning from the third set even though GRAZ stepped up their efforts with the help of Julia Radl and Ursula Ehrhart.

Marco Mencarelli, head coach of Yamamay: “We were confident that we would make it to the next round: we won without any problems the two sets we needed, afterwards I saw a bit of a drop, but it is normal also because of the many matches we have been playing lately.”

Eva Dumphart, player of UVC Holding GRAZ: “We knew that making it through this round would have been almost impossible, but we hoped to have a good game here. I think we did well, we are proud of what we have done and we realised that we can put up a fight against teams as strong as Yamamay.”
