Imoco Volley off to #SuperFinalsBerlin to cap amazing season with CL title
CEV Champions League Volley 2019 Super Finals
Berlin, Germany, May 15, 2019. Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO are very much looking forward to playing their second #CLVolleyW gold medal match – especially as they will be a part of the truly history-making Super Finals taking place at Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin on Saturday, May 18. The ‘big match’ will further extend their rivalry with Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA, whom they just beat in the finals of the Italian national league.
There will be more than 500 fans of Imoco Volley supporting the ‘Panthers’ in the German capital. Imoco Volley will be trying to complete their set of #CLVolleyW medals after taking silver and bronze from the 2017 and 2018 editions, respectively. Two years ago, they lost 0-3 to VakifBank ISTANBUL in Treviso, before succumbing to the same opponent in the 2018 semis in Bucharest – where they eventually won the bronze medal.
Imoco Volley and Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA have locked horns in the final of each competition they have contested this season. CONEGLIANO beat NOVARA 3-1 in the Supercup at Palaverde in Treviso, before Igor Gorgonzola pulled out a 3-2 victory in the national cup final in Verona. Earlier this month, Imoco Volley swept three matches in a row to secure the national league title. Imoco Volley and NOVARA have played each other seven times this season, with five wins for CONEGLIANO and two for NOVARA. Looking at the overall history, in 27 matches between these teams so far, CONEGLIANO have won 17 and NOVARA 10.
Two players of Imoco Volley have won the Champions League already – Valentina Tirozzi with Pomi CASALMAGGIORE in 2016 and Kimberly Hill with VakifBank ISTANBUL one year later.
“We have had a great season, reaching the final stage of each competition we have contested and seizing a great national league title,” says Imoco Volley head coach Daniele Santarelli. “However, we still want to write another chapter of our success story – by doing so in the most important competition there is. It will be a great thing to play such a final before a sell-out crowd. I am proud that we are a part of such an event and of the fact that we can count on many of our supporters. They will be in Berlin as well and will provide us with an extra boost of energy. We will be playing a great team, whom we know very well and it will be yet another chapter of our rivalry. We know already that it will be an extremely tough match but we travel to Berlin to provide another joy to our club and fans.”
“We have made it to the Super Final after a very difficult journey. We were on the brink of elimination in the pool phase before we edged two great teams such as Eczacibasi and Fenerbahce,” adds team captain Joanna Wolosz. “We know NOVARA very well and we have been playing them for many years with other trophies at stake. It is an honour and a privilege at the same time to participate in the historic Super Finals. It would be great to win this trophy for our fans and we will be giving our best to play a great final.”
