NOVARA vs CONEGLIANO - Must know facts about the women’s Super Final
CEV Champions League Volley 2019 Super Finals
Luxembourg, May 13, 2019. The countdown to the ‘Volleyball party’ of the year has begun. It is only five days until the top teams in Europe contest the history-making CEV Champions League Volley 2019 Super Finals at Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, with 9,046 fans in attendance to account for a sell-out crowd. Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO and Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA will be the first ones to take to the court on Saturday, May 18, at 16:00 CEST for the women’s ‘grand finale’ whose eventual winners take home a € 400,000 purse.
It is almost redundant to recall the long rivalry between these two teams – which recently locked horns in the championship series of the Italian national league where Imoco Volley claimed three wins in a row, dropping only two sets along the way.
We have pulled together some interesting facts for fans to know ahead of the ‘big match’ where Europe’s most coveted Volleyball crown will be at stake:
• This is the third all-Italian Champions League final on the women's side, after 2000/2001 and 2004/2005.
• In 2004/2005, Volley BERGAMO defeated Asystel NOVARA 3-0. In 2000/2001, Volley MODENA defeated Caposud REGGIO CALABRIA 3-0.
• Italian teams have won the CL a record eight times, but only once in the previous eight seasons, courtesy of Pomì CASALMAGGIORE in 2015/2016.
• Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA and Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO are both eyeing their first CL trophy. The winners of this match will be the 11th team to win the CL.
• NOVARA and Imoco Volley meet for the third time in the CL, after two fourth round matches in 2017/2018. Both teams won their home match 3-1.
• Those 2017/2018 CL encounters were the only CL matches for NOVARA against fellow Italian sides.
• CONEGLIANO have a W5-L3 CL record against Italian teams, including both matches against NOVARA.
• The rivalry between Imoco Volley and Igor Gorgonzola encompasses as many as 25 domestic matches, with 16 wins for Imoco Volley and nine for NOVARA. Most recently, in 2018, Imoco Volley beat their rivals 3-1 in the Supercup but earlier this season NOVARA got their revenge following a 3-2 victory in the Cup final. Imoco Volley swept three matches in a row to secure the national league title shortly before the CL Super Finals.
• Imoco Volley beat NOVARA in four matches in last year’s championship series of the Italian national league.
• In 2017, NOVARA beat Imoco Volley in the Supercup (3-2) and the Cup final (3-1) as well.
