Volei Alba BLAJ secure ticket to #CLVolleyW 3rd Round with 3-0 home victory
2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Women

Sibiu, Romania, October 30, 2018. Last year’s silver medal winners CSM Volei Alba BLAJ have made it to the 3rd Round of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Women after securing a comprehensive 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-23) victory over VK UP OLOMOUC in their home match at Transilvania Hall in Sibiu. In the next stage of Europe’s elite club competition, BLAJ will be playing the winners of the 2nd Round fixture featuring Germany’s Allianz MTV STUTTGART and SLIEDRECHT Sport of the Netherlands.

CSM Volei Alba BLAJ (ROU) vs. VK UP OLOMOUC (CZE) 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-23)

Despite the result, the hosts did not have an easy match in front of the 1,700 passionate fans in attendance, since the Czech Republic’s vice-champions were very close to winning the first set, after cancelling four set points for BLAJ and failing to cash one of their own. The hosts looked in control in the second set but had to fight hard to close the match in three sets.

Darko Zakoc, head coach of CSM Volei Alba BLAJ: “The team still does not show what I want, we have problems in organising the game, and this applies especially to our reception, but we have no time to complain because the time is short and we have to prepare for the next match. I am disturbed by the lack of consistency in our game and I can say that I am happy just with the result and the fact that we have qualified for the next round.”

Sonja Newcombe, player of CSM Volei Alba BLAJ: “We are still at the stage where we are trying to get to know each other, to figure out what we can offer to this team, we have had problems with the setters in the pre-season and we think you could see that in our game. I am glad we won and we are through to the next phase; it was our goal and I think we will look better in the future. There was an extraordinary audience and I thank them for their support.”

Jiri Teply, head coach of VK UP OLOMOUC: “We have seen our lack of experience today especially when we were very close to winning sets. Of course, I am not satisfied with the result, we could do more, but we have to keep in mind that we played a strong team, who was the favourite from the start. I hope that we can achieve good results in the CEV Cup.”
