Galatasaray storm to Golden Set win to play TRENTINO in #CEVCupM final
2019 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men

Luxembourg, March 5, 2019. Galatasaray ISTANBUL fought their way back from a 1-3 loss last week at the hands of Kuzbass KEMEROVO to claim the return match by the same score and take the all-important Golden Set to end the winning streak of the Russian rookies and secure a spot in the final of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men. Galatasaray will be playing there reigning world champions TRENTINO Itas of Italy, who easily took the two sets they needed in the other semi with Greece’s Olympiacos PIRAEUS.

Galatasaray ISTANBUL (TUR) vs. Kuzbass KEMEROVO (RUS) 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-17); Golden Set: 15-10

•    Galatasaray had to fight their way back from the 1-3 loss they suffered last week in Russia.
•    The first set was a close affair, with Galatasaray asking for a timeout when trailing 13-14. Kuzbass broke further away after the break and eventually finished the set at 25-18 in their favour.
•    The hosts changed pace in the early stages of the second set (7-2) and despite an attempted comeback by their opponents, they continued to shine in attack and blocking to level the match (25-19).
•    Galatasaray soon trailed 2-6 in the third set and a timeout was instrumental towards their comeback. The hosts sealed a 25-21 win to stay in contention for a spot in the final.
•    The home side caught a promising start to the fourth set (11-5) and did not look back anymore, sealing a 3-1 victory at 25-17.
•    At this stage, a Golden Set was necessary to determine the eventual finalists. Galatasaray were leading 8-5 at the side switch, and after a close battle, the hosts stormed to a 15-10 win to claim a spot in the finals.

TRENTINO Itas (ITA) vs. Olympiacos PIRAEUS (GRE) 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 17-25, 25-17)

•    TRENTINO needed two sets only to secure their qualification to the finals after last week’s 3-0 victory in Greece.
•    It is the fourth European final for TRENTINO in five years and the seventh overall.
•    The hosts quickly claimed the two sets they needed to get the job done. Aaron Russell scored 13 points and registered 79% success rate in attack, playing for two sets only.
•    After taking two sets, TRENTINO coach Angelo Lorenzetti made quite many changes to the starting six but the hosts remained focussed and secured a 3-1 win with the help of Gabriele Nelli and Davide Candellaro.
•    This will be TRENTINO’s third final this season after they contested the Supercup back in October in Perugia and the Club World Championship gold medal match in Czestochowa on December 2.

Angelo Lorenzetti, head coach of TRENTINO: “This qualification to the final has a special value for this group but mostly for those few players that shared with me the defeat to TOURS VB in the 2017 edition of the CEV Cup. We are satisfied because this was one of our goals this season and, even though this is not the Champions League, you get to play quality matches in the last rounds. We will put even more efforts to prepare for the double match with Galatasaray to make amends for our bitter loss from two years ago.”
