Zagreb, Croatia, May 15, 2019. The Drawing of Lots on Wednesday afternoon sketched the destiny of 12 European teams as the young players found out their opponents for the pool phase of the Final Round of the CEV U16 Volleyball European Championship 2019 - Women. Pool I will be played in Zagreb, Croatia, while Pool II will be hosted in Trieste, Italy. The eventual champions will be crowned in Trieste on Sunday, July 21.
Apart from the joint organisers Croatia and Italy, the competition will feature the national teams of Turkey, Russia, Slovenia, Finland and Belgium, who all qualified for the Final round via their respective Zonal Association events, while Serbia, Germany, Romania, France and the Netherlands booked their tickets to the finals via the second round of the competition held in late April.
The competition format for the final round includes pool play, followed by the semi-finals that hold a spot for the top two teams from each pool, and classification matches for the third and fourth teams of both pools to determine the positions 5-8.
In 2017 the first edition of the U16 European Championship was held in Sofia, Bulgaria with the Italian girls claiming top honours. The next generation of Italian players will obviously aim to keep the legacy alive on home soil.
