CEV Cup and Challenge Cup format adjusted to deal with COVID-19 pandemic
News from the CEV

Luxembourg, November 19, 2020. After liaising with all relevant stakeholders through a number of videoconference calls and in an effort to minimise travels and exposure to the risk of contracting the novel coronavirus, the CEV has finalised a revised competition format and programme for the 8th Finals and quarterfinals of the CEV Volleyball Cup and CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2021. With the safety and well-being of athletes, officials and everyone associated with Volleyball as the top priority, these competitions will continue in December in four ‘bio-secure bubbles’ per gender.

This means that two 8th Final matches involving four teams will be taking place at the very same venue, with the eventual winners of these fixtures playing a winner-takes-all quarterfinal game – with the winning side progressing straight to the semis.

This format will help deal with the travel and many other restrictions introduced by national authorities across Europe following the resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic. It represents a ‘deviation’ from the traditional format of home and away matches whereby each team plays one match at home in each round – and yet it will account for the necessary flexibility to make sure that these competitions can take place even in times of coronavirus.

As with all Volleyball and Beach Volleyball competitions organised since the outbreak of the global health crisis last spring, all organisers will have to comply with strict hygiene and health protocols to help curb the spread of the disease.

After completion of the remaining 16th Final fixtures, the 2021 edition of the CEV Cup and CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup will resume in early / mid-December as per the following programme:

The revised format and programme are testament to the resilience, sense of solidarity and flexibility already shown on multiple occasions by members of the European Volleyball family in such difficult and challenging times for all.

The CEV will continue to liaise with all stakeholders and monitor the further development of the health crisis with further news and updates to follow in due course – as and if needed.
