CV GRAN CANARIA, THY ISTANBUL record emphatic wins in #CEVChallengeCupW
CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2021

Luxembourg, November 11, 2020. On Tuesday, the hosts of CV GRAN CANARIA secured a comprehensive 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-18, 25-21) in the first of two matches against SLIEDRECHT Sport of the Netherlands played at Centro Insular de Deportes in Las Palmas and scheduled for the 16th Finals of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup.

The first set was highly contested from the beginning before local stars Victoria Foucher and Saray Manzano helped the home side claim a small advantage and eventually run away with a 25-23 victory. The second set began in a similar way, with the Gran Canaria players taking the lead but their Dutch opponents responded swiftly by improving their performance, especially in reception. However, the players coached by Pascual Saurin once again marked the difference with their quality game at the net. Finally, CV GRAN CANARIA set the pace from the early stages of the third set with a strong service game from Foucher and Helia Gonzalez to secure a 3-0 victory, which bodes well ahead of the re-match coming up on Wednesday night. CV GRAN CANARIA will need to take at least two sets to secure their spot in the next round of the competition.

THY ISTANBUL of Turkey triumphed 3-0 as well in the first of two consecutive matches against OK KAŠTELA of Croatia. The two-time BVA Cup champions ran away comfortable winners with a 25-16, 25-7, 25-12 score line as the hosts wore black ribbons on their shirts to pay tribute to the 82nd anniversary since the death of the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
