Sir Colussi Sicoma PERUGIA win means LEON will face Zenit KAZAN for first time
2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Men
Luxembourg, March 20, 2019. A comfortable straight sets home win for last season's Bronze medallists means that they will again face Zenit KAZAN in the semi-finals of the CEV Volleyball Champions League. This will mean a return trip to Russia for their latest star player Wilfredo LEON, who left Zenit last summer and moved to Sir Colussi Sicoma PERUGIA. After scraping through in the tie-break set last week against CHAUMONT VB 52 HM, tonight felt very different, much to the delight of a 2,700-strong crowd.
Sir Colussi Sicoma PERUGIA (ITA) vs CHAUMONT VB 52 HM (FRA) 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-17)
• It was the block that did most of the damage again for Sir Colussi Sicoma PERUGIA, proving as effective as ever to close out the first set (25-21). In total there were 10 aces for the Italian side throughout the match, compared to one from the visiting team.
• Leon produced a sensational ace at the end of the second set which was recorded as reaching 133 km/h! One of the fastest of the competition for sure and with that, the set was decided.
• Despite the tie not yet being secured, head coach Lorenzo Bernardi gave opportunities to the entire team to play but the level hardly dropped.
• The best scorer and MVP was Wilfredo Leon with 16 points (10 spikes, 5 aces and a block).
• Sir Colussi Sicoma PERUGIA facing Zenit KAZAN is a re-match of last year's semi-final, and this time LEON will be on the Italian side of the net!
Aleksandar Atanasijevic, player of Sir Colussi Sicoma PERUGIA: “It has been a great game. We played well starting from the first point scored. It is an important win; we could not miss this match. And now, we wait for the semi-finals against Zenit KAZAN.”
Silvano Prandi, coach of CHAUMONT VB 52 HM: “Everything was missing tonight, starting Volleyball itself. What we have seen tonight was the superiority of PERUGIA compared to us.”
