Double Ukrainian triumph at #EuroBeachVolleyU18 in Izmir
CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championships 2020

Izmir, Turkey, September 20, 2020. The 2020 edition of #EuroBeachVolleyU18 reached its climax on Sunday with the semis and medal matches. Two teams from Ukraine, Yevhenii Boiko/Vladyslav Omelchuk and Anhelina Khmil/Tetiana Lazarenko emerged as the eventual winners of men’s and women’s competition, respectively – as they did not suffer a single setback throughout the tournament held at Pamucak Beach.

In the first women’s semi-final, Anna Chechelnytska/Daria Romaniuk of Ukraine defeated Italy’s Aurora Mattavelli/Margherita Tega in two sets (21-10, 21-18). The second semi-final was a slightly closer affair, and yet Khmil/Lazarenko beat their Swiss opponents Anouk Kressler and Lea Toschini in straight sets (21-15, 21-15) as well.

Emotions running high for U18 European champions Anhelina Khmil and Tetiana Lazarenko (UKR)

Kressler/Toschini needed 39 minutes to secure the bronze medal from their matchup with the Italians (21-15, 21-18).

Later in the afternoon, Khmil/Lazarenko claimed an all-Ukrainian gold medal match 2-0 (21-18, 21-19). This result definitely bodes well for the future perspectives of Ukrainian Beach Volleyball on the international stage.

As expected, the biggest favourites of the men’s competition, Boiko/Omelchuk made it to the final. They beat Russia’s Vladislav Panchenko/Ivan Chuprinov in two sets (25-23, 21-17) in the semis. Latvian pair Kristians Fokerots/Karlis Abelitis had to fight much harder to stay in contention for gold, as they needed three sets to edge another Russian team, Egor Zharovin/Vitaly Markov (21-17, 10-21, 15-11) in 48 minutes.

Panchenko/Chuprinov could regroup after their setback in the semis to finish the tournament with bronze. Boiko/Omelchuk completed a truly memorable day for Ukraine, as they delivered a great performance to beat Fokerots/Abelitis 2-0 (21-12, 21-13) and secure the second triumph for their country in as many gold medal matches contested in Izmir.
