Batumi poised to host historic Olympic qualifier on Georgian soil
2018-2020 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup

Batumi, Georgia, June 21, 2019. The popular Georgian seaside resort of Batumi will be playing host this weekend to a double-gender tournament scheduled for the first stage of the 2018-2020 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup. It is the first Olympic Beach Volleyball qualifying event to take place in Georgia, as Batumi have found their spot on the international Beach Volleyball map by hosting an EEVZA zonal event every year since 2014. Moreover, Batumi is the European City of Sport for 2019 – which makes it an even more fitting place where to host the Continental Cup event.

The teams due to compete in Pool F have arrived in Batumi and have practiced at the venue of the tournament, which includes two competition courts and one warm-up court as well. The summer season has already begun on the shores of the Black Sea and the weather conditions are just ideal for hosting a Beach Volleyball competition.

Teams from Georgia and Hungary will contest both the men’s and women’s competitions. Slovakia and Belgium complete the men’s field – with Belgium represented by their top tandem Dries Koekelkoren and Tom van Walle. Norway and Turkey are the other nations due to contest the women’s tournament.

The organisers in Batumi look forward to the start of the competition on Saturday morning, with the courts set up right by the shore of the Black Sea in an effort to attract as many spectators as possible.
