Batumi serves up four more teams for Continental Cup Phase 2
2018-2020 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup

Batumi, Georgia, June 23, 2019.  Pool F for Men and Women of Phase 1 of the 2018-2020 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup concluded on the coastline of the Black Sea with four teams taking a step closer to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.  Following the weekends matches, Belgium, Slovakia for men and Norway and Turkey for women qualified to the next phase set for May 2020.

Despite the home teams from Georgia losing their opportunity to progress the day prior, there was no less enthusiasm on the final day with ten matches in both genders to be played.

In the men’s pool, the Belgium teams of Dennis Deroey/Martijn Colson and Dries Koekelkoren/Tom van Walle were faultless winning all their matches in two sets. Second place was sorted out in a match-up between Slovakia and neighbours Hungary which went the distance.  In the opener Botond Oláh/Bence Attila Stréli of Hungary came through in three sets to take an early advantage.  However, Jan Namesansky/Michal Hovorka stepped up for Slovakia to take two straight sets wins showing all they have got to secure a spot in the next phase.

Norway dominated the women’s final against Turkey, with Victoria Faye Kjølberg/Ane Guro Hjortland and Ingrid Lunde/Sunniva Helland-Hansen taking the two wins they needed to take top spot on the podium.  Turkey then moved to the decisive 2nd/3rd place match against Hungary, where as with the men’s competition, the Hungarians just missed out on a spot in the 2nd Phase, Turkey winning in three matches.
