Baden to crown Europe’s Beach Volleyball stars in the making
CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championship 2019
Baden, Austria, June 13, 2019. After the highly successful Baden Open, the Beach Volleyball party continues in Baden with the 2019 edition of #EuroBeachVolleyU18 that is due to run at the Strandbad from Thursday to Sunday after a qualification round for men’s only held on Wednesday. It is the second time an age group European Championship takes place in Baden, after the city in the outskirts of Vienna played host to the U22 competition two years ago.
Even though this event coincides with the international debut for many of the participating players and teams, there are some young stars vying for further glory in their still young careers. One of these is Russia’s Mariia Bocharova, who is a three-time European champion – twice in the U20 division and once in the U18 event – as well as a Youth Olympic champion. Bocharova was a silver medal winner at last year’s #EuroBeachVolleyU18 and this time will play along with Elizaveta Gubina to secure further success for Russia.
Another player with international experience is Daria Gusarova of Cyprus, who last week helped her country secure a spot in the second stage of the CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup. Spain’s Tania Moreno Matveeva is a bronze medal winner from last year’s U19 World Championship in Nanjing, China.
Teams from Russia, Germany and Czech Republic are likely to be among the medal contenders in the men’s competition. Austria will try to use the home-court advantage to claim a medal – the last time they were able to do so was in 2013 in Molodechno, Belarus, where Paul Buchegger and Moritz Pristauz secured silver. Austria’s last medal in the women’s competition came in 2015 in Riga, when Katharina Holzer and Ilona Kiss lost the final to home stars Tina Graudina and Paula Neciporuka of Latvia.
