Top seeds live up to their billing on opening day of #EuroBeachVolleyU18
CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championship 2019

Baden, Austria, June 13, 2019. The 2019 edition of the CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championship sponsored by SPORT.LAND.NÖ started under perfect summer weather conditions on Thursday in Baden, with temperatures rising up to 34 degrees. The Beach Volleyball stars in the making from as many as 33 nations, accounting for 30 teams per gender, fought for a spot in the elimination rounds due to follow later this week. The top seeds in both genders managed to win their respective games. The girls contested two of three pool games, while the boys had their first matches of the competition.

In the men’s event, the top seeds from Russia, Czech Republic and Germany lived up to their status, even though Jakub Sepka/Ondrej Herman from the Czech Republic hat a close game against one of the home teams representing Austria. Ivan Osipov/Anatolii Vasilenko (RUS) and Leon Meier/Lui Wüst (GER) delivered a very good performance in their first pool matches. “We had some troubles to find our balance, but especially in set two we made some strong points,” the Germans said.

Austria’s number one team Noel Krassnig/Matthias Glatz used the home court advantage and won their first game, which is a good omen for the two matches due to follow on Friday. After the game, Noel Krassnig said, “At the beginning, I was a little bit nervous but then we delivered a good game.”

The same story unfolded in the women’s competition. Top seeds Mariia Bocharova/Elizaveta Gubina (RUS), Elea Beutel/Paula Schürholz (GER) and Marketa Svozilova/Eliska Tezzele (CZE) won their matches in two sets. There was no chance for their opponents. The Czech girls said after the second match, “We were tired after the first game, but now we are happy that we made it to a second win.”

It was a good day for players and organisers alike. Even though it looked like a heavy thunderstorm was coming to Baden, the wind blew it away and the sun even came back for the late matches after no drops of rain fell on the courts.

You can follow all of the action from the centre court live on EuroVolleyTV.
